If you work any job that requires you to sit at a desk for an extended period of time, you are at risk for experiencing back pain. You do not have to be completing strenuous physical activity to have this kind of pain on a regular basis–which you have probably found out if you you’ve been working your desk job for a while now. So how can you stop back pain from ever starting at work? Here are Achieve Health’s tips.
Know the possible causes
Some causes of back pain are commonly known, such as slouching. But really, just staying seated at your desk for a long period of time can put you at risk for back pain, especially if your chair is not positioned correctly. This brings us to our next tip.
Position your chair correctly
A quality ergonomic chair can do wonders for preventing back pain at work–if you position it correctly. When you are seated at your desk, you should be able to keep your elbows at a 90 degree angle whenever your hands are on your desk and you should be able to put a finger underneath your thighs. If your finger cannot slide under, rest your feet on something to elevate your legs. The bottom of your back should also be slightly arched, and your elbows should be slightly raised whenever your arms are on your arm rest.
Seat yourself so you could place a fist between your calves and the edge of the chair, too, and also ensure your eyes are positioned to look at the centre of your computer screen. By following these tips, you can have more pain-free days at work and prevent long-term problems from developing.
Stretch or go for a walk whenever possible
We know you have a lot of work to do, but taking a few moments or even minutes to stretch your arms and legs could do a great deal to help you feel more comfortable at work. It might even make you more productive.
