Whichever way you look at it, the changing of the seasons can be something of a bittersweet time for those with a vested interest in women’s fashion. And at this time of year in particular, it’s often a case of bidding a fond farewell to the warm weather of the summer, while at the same time looking forward to that quintessentially beautiful British autumn season.
Of course, for fashionistas the changing of the seasons also represents the perfect excuse for stocking up on all manner of garments and accessories more suitable for the cooler months ahead. Which is all well and good if you have plenty of spare cash to throw around, but what if you prefer to hold onto your money and still look outstanding throughout the autumn season?
Well, the simple answer could be to take a look in your wardrobe and get creative with what you already have. There will always be certain summer staples that will unfortunately be confined to your closet for the next nine months at least, but at the same time with just a few added extras and a dash of imagination, you might be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to keep your summer fashion collections alive throughout the autumn.
Make the Most of Maxi Dresses
A prime example to illustrate the point – you might be more used to reaching for your maxi dresses when heading to the beach, heading out on a summer stroll or relaxing in the afternoon sunshine, but they are also just the ticket for looking great throughout the autumn. And it’s a pretty obvious transition too – all you need to do is be creative when it comes to keeping yourself warm while ensuring that the maxi dress itself remains the primary focal point of your outfit. From blazers to chunky knit sweaters and pretty much anything else with sleeves that you look good in, making the most of your maxi dresses beyond the summer months really couldn’t be easier…or cheaper!
Add Tights
And it’s exactly the same story with tights as well as when it comes to prolonging the life of your summer collection and looking your best throughout the autumn, you could say tights are the most powerful weapon in your arsenal. They’re cheap, they’re practical and they have the very real potential to allow you to carry on wearing so many of your favourite summer staples long into the autumn. Suffice to say, it’s about time everyone stopped listening to the old ‘no shorts after summer’ rule and instead got on with looking fabulous and making the most of what may have. Hot pants in November? Why the hell not!
Think Layers
One of the very best things about the layered look is not only the fact that it has been right on the cutting edge of forward-thinking fashion pretty much forever, but also that it is fantastically simple to pull-off. It’s one of a few examples of contemporary fashion that’s nigh-on impossible to go wrong with and allows you to make use of almost anything you already have. Of course, there’s care to be taken when it comes to mixing certain prints, patterns and colours, but chances are you already have a thousand and one things lying around that can be put together in a multitude of ways. And when shopping for additional garments with layering in mind, it’s a case of picking up mostly simple and affordable basics.
The Joy of Jackets
Something else more than worth remembering at this time of year is the way in which no matter how much effort you make to look absolutely fantastic, chances are most of your hard work will be completely hidden by the autumn/winter coat you practically live in. Which of course isn’t exactly the most motivating of thoughts, but at the same time means that if you were to invest in a statement-making jacket, you’d have the perfect go-to for the whole season. This autumn, things like military cargo jackets, leather jackets, blazers and trench coats are all once again doing the rounds.
Grab Your Boots
And finally, one of the very best ways of transforming idyllic summer looks into the perfect outfits for the autumn season is to simply add to a pair of quality autumn boots. Once again, it’s a case of combining practicality with style while at the same time arming yourself with something that can be used to great effect with almost everything in your wardrobe. Keep things simple rather than going for the more elaborate designs and chances are you’ll find yourself instinctively reaching for your boots throughout the season, regardless of what you’re wearing.
