Kosi River, which is one of the major rivers in north India flows through the region. A large rock exists on the river and is the site of Garjiya Devi Temple. According to legends, when the goddess was looking for a new location, she floated on the Kosi river during a heavy flood. Lord Shiva spotted her and requested her to stay there. She then chose the location of the huge rock that still exists on the river. Later, locals found the idol of the goddess and built a temple atop the rock. There is a tradition of taking bath on the river Kosi before entering the temple. Apart from the goddess, the other prime deities worshiped here are: Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Baba Bhairon.
