Building Site Safety: What Every New Worker Should Know

Working in construction can be a great and rewarding career. However, it is also considered a high risk career due to the possibility of sustaining injury. Every worker, no matter their role in a project, should be aware of key safety measures taken at construction sites. Here’s what you need to know.

Utilize Protective Safety Equipment

In many cases, signs will be posted informing you what safety gear you should be wearing while in a construction site. This can include hard hats, safety goggles, harnesses, reflective jackets and more. Other equipment that should be on site include things like proper waste disposal services and porta potties, which can be obtained via porta potty rentals. Having proper waste containment and removal on site can eliminate health hazards.

Follow All Protocol

Workers at construction sites should follow all company protocol as well as safety instructions from their managers. This will decrease the possibility of injury for yourself and others working at the site. You should refuse to do anything that does not follow safety protocol or that you believe is unnecessarily dangerous. Talk to managers or even the proper authorities if anything is going on at your building site that is unsafe or illegal.

Regularly Check Equipment

In addition to using all proper safety equipment and following the right protocols, you should also regularly check equipment to ensure it is functioning properly and does not constitute a safety risk. Malfunctioning or ill-maintained equipment can be one of the greatest hazards in a construction zone. Ensure all tools and equipment are properly set up and functioning as they should be before you start using them. Be vigilant and watch for any abnormalities during use. Stop use immediately if something seems off and get it checked out.

Know Your Workman’s Compensation Rights

Workers compensation laws vary widely from state to state. Because construction workers work in a profession with a high risk of injury, you should take the time to learn the basics of the laws in your state as well as your company’s policy. If you have been injured at work, the very first step is inform your supervisor about it and seek necessary medical attention. If you are having issues receiving proper compensation, contact a workers compensation attorney for assistance.
Building site safety is no joke. Injuries workers sustain during construction can be debilitating or life-threatening. Never leave your health or the health of your co-workers up to chance. Use the right equipment and follow the proper safety protocols to stay safe while on the job.
