Electric Vs Manual Toothbrushes

Patients of our dental clinic in Surrey BC often wonder if switching to an electric toothbrush might be a better choice to provide a more thorough cleaning. And sometimes we can be a little lax about putting in that 2 minutes the dentist recommends, so here we take a look at the differences.

Manual toothbrushes can be effective if used with proper brushing technique for the recommended 2 minutes twice a day. As mentioned here sometimes we can get lazy with our oral routine or maybe that last dental checkup leaves something to be desired. Your dentist may even suggest you switch to an electric toothbrush if he feels your oral hygiene and general oral health could use improvement.

Electric Vs Manual Toothbrushes

An electric toothbrush does a great job and requires very little effort on your part. Dentist usually recommend an electric toothbrush that has rotating, oscillating heads that make the ideal circulating brushing motion. The user merely has to guide the toothbrush lightly over the fronts, backs and chewing surfaces of the teeth while the moving head does all the work. Many of the electric toothbrushes come with a built in timer and are a great way to help kids spend the right amount of time, adults too!

With the round, rotating head you are able to reach those awkward angles at the back of your mouth. You don’t have to manually brush the teeth and just guide the electric toothbrush gently into the right places. For anyone who has a tendency to brush too hard and damage their gums an electric toothbrush might help them with that. Because the toothbrush is making the motion as you lightly guide it over tooth surfaces and let it do the scrubbing it results in an even amount of pressure, some newer models even have built in sensors.  Electric toothbrushes are often recommended by dentist for their patients wearing braces as long as you use the right type. One that produces a circular motion rather than up and down motion can do a great job of cleaning teeth while wearing braces and leave teeth in good condition once braces are removed. The electric toothbrush can aid those with conditions like arthritis or other health conditions.
